Sukkot in the City

Yes! The Feasts are upon us. The one requiring the most physical preparation being Sukkot or Tabernacles. There are many who can’t get the time off work or have a newborn, are ill or just aren’t able to camp for the feast, for whatever reason and would like to commemorate it in some way where they are. Last year was our first year celebrating Sukkot and since we didn’t/don’t live in a suburb or rural area, we weren’t sure how to commemorate the feast. We lived/live in an apartment building and we have a baby. Additionally, we were running back and forth to the hospital because my Aunt was transitioning. I saw fellowships online planning and talking about camping but it wasn’t feasible for us and at a loss for what to do, I came up with an idea, All praises to The Most High. Disclaimer: I am just sharing what we did and what we’ll likely be doing again until we can camp out for the feast. This is not instructional or authoritative in any way. Prayerfully, seek guidance from The Most High for yourself. I’m just being honest about my situation and how we handled it.

We decided to set up tent-like structures in our home over the living and sleeping areas. I achieved this by using mosquito netting that goes over the bed. The ones I got had four definitive corners so it was more of a tent and less of a canopy which just hangs down. I tied each hanging section in a loose kind of knot so the tent was not closed off and we could move around without disturbing the fragile structure. By the way, getting the kids to be easy with the nets was a whole ‘nother animal. They did fall a a few times, not completely, but we just tacked them back up. We also put up twinkle lights to mimic being out under the stars and it’s a joyous feast so I thought the kids would really enjoy it, which they did. The lights had a bunch of settings, one of which was dim. That worked well for when it was time to sleep or we’d just turn them off all together. Here is a picture (the best one I had) of what it looked like.

We used a combination of hooks and electrical tape to secure the nets to the ceiling. No screws because it is an apartment. The hooks did well for a while but were so flimsy that eventually there was mostly tape holding the tents up. It was quite beautiful after all was said and done though.

The product links in this article are the exact same products I used. If you aren’t able to camp out and you have another creative way to commemorate the Feast please share it below. And of course any other comments are welcomed. Be blessed and Shalom.

  1. Such an awesome way of celebrating tabernacles…see some folks will have an excuse to not celebrate this high holy day that we are commanded to keep because they live in an apartment/condo and have no backyard..I love that your family is doing what you can to keep the most highs holy days..this post will surely help someone that is in this same situation..Shalom

    1. Thank you so much for saying that. My heart’s desire was to keep the feast and I just didn’t know what to do. But APTTMH I said, “He made me a creative person so I found a creative solution”. Shared the idea with my husband and he thought it was a good solution as well and that’s what we did.
